Finding cool new things for dogs whether they be soft and cuddly, delicious or digital is part of what makes the Sarasota Dog team’s life worth living. We’ve been searching in both the Apple Store and the Android Marketplace for the best of the best. Our search has found a few applications that bear a look, and a few that are just not worth your time. Here’s the bare bones report.
The Good:
And we are using the word “good” loosely, but there’s an app called MyDog, which really has the best intentions. You can enter all of your dog’s particulars . . .really like a profile about vaccinations and medical notes as well as their chip number. In case of an emergency, its all right there in your phone. Really, if your dog gets lost – the last thing you want to do is to have to dive into your file cabinet.
Purportedly you can search for dog parks, vets and dog-friendly venues. When we searched the Sarasota zip code 34233, the app returned only Lakeview Paw Park and 17th Street Paw Park. Nothing else.
We are giving this MyDog a good rating because its a great idea and hopefully they are just making their way down to the smaller cities. A search for a Chicago zip code returned Rescues, Walkers, Vets, Food Stores, Hotels, Groomers and more. The App is free and is available through iTunes.
Perfect Dog is a handy guide to dog breeds with some special features that can help you choose the right type of dog for your lifestyle (according to them) and some tips about grooming. We especially like that they’ve included several pictures of each dog breed. Also free through iTunes.
If you don’t already know about Fab.com, you’ve got to check it out. It’s a shopping app but Fab.com brings together smaller manufacturers and artisans to market in a highly visual (and user-friendly way). They offer cool products for pets with a modern twist. Every week, Pet Thursdays includes sale items, sometimes well below retail. Warning: Having this app on your phone makes shopping for your pet seriously addictive.
The Bad:
Dog Whistler app sounded like a great idea. Press a button on your phone for a serious whistle. Here’s the problem though – we couldn’t make it Whistle. It’s free through iTunes – maybe you can make it work.
The Ugly:
MyPet. Okay this is just stupid. It has to do with virtual pets and feeding other people’s virtual pets. Fuggedaboutit. It’s a waste of time.
Got a favorite dog app? We ‘d like to know about it. Please send us an email with the name of the application and we’ll take it for a test run.
