We’ve just wrapped up our annual Halloween Party for People and Pets, Pints for Paws SRQ. Thousands of dollars will now flow to two local rescues, Satchel’s Last Resort and Vintage Paws Sanctuary. For that, we are thrilled.
Here’s what we learned. While the costume contest was fun – who doesn’t want to see four Yorkies in a wagon dressed as potato chips?
– it’s the pie-eating contest
that really engaged people, and their dogs.
And, as if you didn’t know, people want to go out with their dogs. Having your dog along, just makes everything better. We feel less shy, and more open to chatting with strangers. Dogs are such willing companions, no complaining about what to wear or who else will be there. Why wouldn’t you want to bring your dog? Note to local restaurants … a Sarasota County permit for dog-friendly dining is less than a couple of hundred dollars.
The day after an event like this is always somewhat anti-climactic. No matter how much you plan, there are always minor snafus on event day. Someone’s gps didn’t work or a sign was forgotten. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that hopefully, when the event is done and the money is there, more dogs and cats can get a second chance.
Local media, local businesses and local shelters – we are all in this together to support each other. By donating gift cards local businesses received exposure to a whole new audience and with a feel-good vibe. Coverage by local television raises awareness for the non-profits and gives viewers a treat with footage of lovable pets. Thanks to Sarasota Animal Advocates for their participation.
The real Halloween Holiday is just around the corner. Please remember to check your pet’s identification tag now and make sure it’s up-to-date! We hope that you and your dog have a safe and Happy Halloween.
