Southeastern Guide Dogs opens Discovery Center in Sarasota

The new Discovery Center for students and their guide dogs opens today at 1618 Main Street in downtown Sarasota. Students begin their training program at the Southeastern Guide Dog campus in Palmetto. On completion of their program in Palmetto, they continue their course in Sarasota. Here they learn the methods to function in an urban environment with their harnessed guide dogs.

Last night, students with their dogs, trainers, staff members and supporters were welcomed at an Open House at the new facility. The spacious new quarters has large training rooms and a delightful new gift shop with specialty collars, pet futons, gourmet treats and many other doggie items.

The center plans to offer a number of activities in the future including, Ask the Trainer, Ask the Guide Dog User, Hands On Health and Wellness, Proper Care of Dogs, designed for children, and many other programs. On Saturdays, once a month, doggie hugging sessions are planned, as well.

With the new facility in this highly visible area, it hoped that more people will become aware of the Southeastern Guide Dog organization and benefit from their services. Individual families and groups are welcome to stop in and see the puppies, buy a gift, speak with a trainer or register for one of the workshops. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 to 5 and Saturday 10-2.

Dog Days Sale at Kane’s

Kane’s did such a cool thing today. Their Dog Day’s sale and event was unique concept to bring dog people together to support Nate’s Place and the Humane Society of Sarasota County. Little doggie footprints led the way through the store’s show room to the vendor’s. Fur Nanny, Woof Gang Bakery, Paws for Nutrition and other’s had tables and booths set up in and among the room vignettes. This informal exhibit style made it easy for everyone to chat and had a festive ambiance. A portion of today’s proceeds will be donated to HSSC and Nate’s place. Kudu’s to Kane’s for caring about our community. Their amazing staff and to the General Manager Lola made it look like a breeze! Click on the arrow below to play the slideshow.

Michelle Sampson, President of Gimme Shelter Pets, a 501 (c) 3 created a great ambiance and party in the chic setting of Ceviche. Stations for Palm Readings, Glitter Tats, and Chair Massages added a chance to meet and chat with other animal friendly folks. Michelle told us : “We were pleasantly surprised at the turn-out and the support from the Sarasota community for the animals. A big thanks to Ceviche who provided an awesome venue for our event.”

Congratulations to Michelle and to all of the animals that she helps!

Party at the Polo Grill to Benefit Honor Sanctuary

Last night’s Charity Bartending Event at the Polo Grill was a smash! Animal Lovers and Polo Grill regulars celebrated Honor Sanctuary’s work to help and protect pets that have been neglected or abandoned. Cindy Morton and the volunteer bartenders donated all tips to the Honor Sanctuary. Thanks to the Polo Grill for hosting this fun and unique event!

Poochie’s Pampered Pups a new doggie daycare opened its doors to the public, Saturday June 5th from Noon to 3.

Lots of folks stoppedby for a visit with Rhonda Norden owner of Poochie’s to say hello and check out this new facility for grooming and daycare. It’s was party for people and dogs!

17th Street Frolic – Saturday May 29, 2010

Between Honore and Beneva -4910 17th Street is a patch of land that is just for dogs. There’s an expansive lawn for running, jumping and playing ball. Several small covered pavillions dot the park, bags are supplied Fencing squares off an area for smaller dogs that seemed to be populated almost entirely by Shiba Inus when we were there. Picnic table and benches provide some basic 2 legged creature comforts. Lots of good fun, sniffing, licking and playing
