LakeView Paw Park

LakeView Paw Park sits beside LakeView Elementary School. You can access it from Proctor by going North on a little street called Hand. The park is fully-fenced for safe off-leash walking and play. Water stations and bags are supplied. Most of the walking track is covered with mulch so it rarely gets totally muddy. But you’ll probably want to wear tennis shoes at least as it can be somewhat uneven terrain. The Paw Park is open from sunrise-up to sunset. A seperate area inside the park offers a smaller play area so that you can isolate your dog from others and to familiarize him with park smells, sounds and ambiance. Owners must pick up after their dogs. It’s a great place for every one to get a little exercise and fresh air.

Longboat Key’s Joan M. Durant Park

There’s a little secret garden on Long Boat Key called the Joan M. Durante Park. It’s located at 5550 Gulf of Mexico Drive, just a hair north of Euphemia Haye restaurant.

On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, the park was lightly populated with runners, walkers and a few bikes. Biking was not so easy as most of the paths were gravel. We were delighted to see the sign: Leashed Dogs are Welcome.

The park looks a little bit like a manicured bayou. Fountains and ornamental grasses line the walkway to the pavillion. Beyond lays a stretch of path out to the bay.

Water and waste bags are not provided at this park, so come prepared. Aside from the pavillion, there is very little shade so sunscreen is also in order.

This great facility offers residents a safe place for dog walking away from the road and for visitors to the Key it should be a go to spot to get some exercise for their pup! Open from dawn to dusk.

MeetUp at Venice Dog Beach, Lunch with Chef Rolf

Perfect day for the beach today and dozens of dog lovers thought so too! The sand at Brohard Paw Park seemed much softer with few pebbles too. We romped, played with frisbees, swam and met new friends in Venice.

The Saltwater Cafe staff was very kind to our pups and the food was great!

Note to seafood lovers, the fried calamari was incredibly crisp, and Raw Bar Sampler plate was delectable. You can’t beat the lunch time burger for $5.99.

17th Street Frolic – Saturday May 29, 2010

Between Honore and Beneva -4910 17th Street is a patch of land that is just for dogs. There’s an expansive lawn for running, jumping and playing ball. Several small covered pavillions dot the park, bags are supplied Fencing squares off an area for smaller dogs that seemed to be populated almost entirely by Shiba Inus when we were there. Picnic table and benches provide some basic 2 legged creature comforts. Lots of good fun, sniffing, licking and playing

Venice Dog Beach – Brohard Park

Breezy warmth drew us down to the Venice Dog Beach, and it was the perfect day for frolicking by the sea. At 10:00 am, there were probably 30 people scattered down the beach front and oh say 40 something dogs. All playing nicely, lounging with their families or swimming out to retrieve a ball. We met Shiloh a classic Golden, and Reagan an exquisitely gentle Great Dane, with beautiful brindle markings. This is an outing that is well worth the trip now that we are into the nicer weather. From Bee Ridge and I75 the drive was about 25 minutes.

We took a short cut that circumvented some of the traffic. Here’s what to do, take I75 to Laurel Road, proceed past the yellow flashing, and turn left on Albee Farm Road. Take Albee Farm Road all the way until it dead ends into Route 41, take a left on 41, right on Venice Avenue over the bridge, continue to Harbor Drive then just stay on Harbor Drive past Sharkey’s and you’ll see Brohard Park on your right. It is totally worth the trip.
