Hi all! I was out at Animal Services a few days ago with HONEY, the darlin' doggie I'm fostering for them and while I was there a woman came in to inquire about FIONA. The desk attendant beamed that Fiona had been adopted on a trial basis, i.e. she was in a home with hopes she would fit in well and everything work out, So everyone CROSS YOUR PAWS FOR FIONA! Hopefully all will go well and she'll never have to spend another moment in another shelter ... even one as patient and caring as Srasota County Animal Services. And PS - a BIG thank you to Tami Treadway, Lt. Ortner, and the AS staff for having faith and keeping Fiona FAR longer than she would have made it in most municipal shelters. Our AS team REALLY TRIES but needs your help so please volunteer at the shelter or foster; the need is currently (8/3/11) CRITICAL. Thanks all!

Absolutely dead on Elizabeth. One common error people make is judging the amount of food they give their dog based on how much the human eats. If the 200 lb human sits down to a meal that weighs two pounds (main course, appetizer, drinks, dessert and mint at the door), they'll look at Fido and figure a hamburger sized treat is appropriate.

Assuming the small dog weighs 2% of what the master weighs, a wild guess would be a quarter pound of meat treat. Since the dog weighs around four pounds, the "treat" should work out to about 2.5 tablespoon, yet the poor thing usually ends up with something a human could eat, a whole hamburger. The dog devours it and enjoys it. If it only happened once in a lifetime, there would be no harm. Sadly, it happens daily in many cases and explains so many obese animals.

How many times have we heard, "Oh, it won't hurt him, it's just a little bit."

Add to that the animal gets little to no exercise and their doomed to being prisoners inside their own bodies.
