The holiday season is here and there is a buzz of excitement in the air! Friends, family and neighbors are gathering to share the holiday cheer. From the emergency doctors at Critical Care and Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota – here’s a holiday tip sheet to keep everyone safe.
1) Dogs love treats but they should always get dog treats made especially for canines. Candy, cakes and holiday treats should be kept well out of the reach of dogs (not under the tree- not even for a minute!), but preferably in the refrigerator.
2) Tinsel, wrapping or even cellophane wrappers on candy are also dangerous to dogs. Keep a large bag handy during your unwrapping party and stuff all of the wrapping in the bag safely out of reach of your pup.
3) Your trash – the trash can can be the most deadly spot in the house for your pet. With the tasty treats in your trash can the temptation can be overwhelming for your pup. Be sure it is impenetrable by your canine family members. Remember dogs can be crafty and some dogs can open cabinet doors, you might try a child safety lock.
4) Secure the perimeter! With neighbors and friends popping by, its easy for a door to be left unlatched – and fair game for your dog to take a walk on his own. Post a little note at your front door reminding visitors and your kids to make sure the door is closed tightly.
5) Time to destress. Build in a few extra walks or time to play catch with your dog, so that he or she can work off their extra energy. They’ll be less apt to get into trouble if they are happy and relaxed.
If you feel that your pet has eaten something toxic, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 and take your pet to the closest veterinary emergency room for immediate treatment.
