If you are the proud owner of a Doodle – Golden, Berna or some other Doodle mix., you have some unique grooming rules to deal with!
Here are some quick tips from Erin of The Lucky Puppy SRQ
At Home Grooming Tools
Every Doodle Mom or Dad should have a slicker brush and a metal comb.
Always use the slicker brush first and then carefully comb your pet from the skin out. Be gentle – you may want to look at a DeTangler comb that has rotating tines.
Is your Doodle a swimmer?
With so many pools in Florida, it’s likely that your pup will randomly jump in for a dip to keep cool or just for fun.
Be sure to wait until they are completely dry before you give them a full brush out. This will definitely hold the matting down. You may also want to give them a rinse with the hose, especially if you have just treated your pool – or if your dog has skin issues.
Are you a multi-dog household?
If your dog plays a lot with siblings in your home, be aware the ears, legs and neck area get matted much easier. Those are the areas mostly frequently grabbed on to by the other dog (s) during play.
Take off that harness!
If your Doodle wears a harness or a vest on walks, make sure you only keep it on during walks and take it off as soon as you get inside the home. The friction of the harness against the fur and skin can cause severe matting between the shoulder blades, back of neck and chest area.
Pro-Grooming schedule
Your Doodle is going to need regular professional grooming attention. Depending on length of hair, lifestyle, swimming and rate of play – a healthy schedule for grooming would be every 5-8 weeks.
