As you have probably read, there is an outbreak of Canine influenza virus (CIV) in the MidWest. Because many of our visitors in Florida travel from that part of the country, it’s likely that dog flu is already here. So what can you do? We asked Dr. Anne Chauvet for some background and tips.
CIV is a respiratory disease from a virus so it is transmitted through close contact between dogs. It is usually self -limiting but can be annoying like a flu for humans. The treatment is supportive care such a good nutrition, hydration and anti inflammatories, antitussive if needed. It takes time for the virus to run its course. The rule of thumb is that if your dog is sneezing or coughing, or has a fever, no play dates, isolate your pup from other dogs and call your veterinarian. If you see a dog sneeze or cough, unless you know that there is another cause but the flu, keep your dog away, Dr. Chauvet told us. To read more about dog flu – check this link from the ASPCA.
