It seems like every corner in Sarasota is under construction. Between new developments and apartments, coyotes and other wildlife have no where to go. Coyotes are here and for your pet’s protection, be aware. Wildlife has been displaced and they are hungry. Small dogs and cats are prey.
A coyote was spotted today in the Greenfield area. That’s near Honore and Wilkenson. Coyotes like to hunt at dawn and dusk. If you are walking a small dog, a coyote that is hungry enough could approach. Making noise will help to scare them off. Yell your head off, clap your hands or better yet carry an air horn. Don’t stop until they coyote is well out of sight. They will often back off and noise – and then return.
These deterrents are not guaranteed but are a good first line of defense. You can find air horns at Holistic for Pets and WoofGang Bakery on Bee Ridge and other pet supply stores.
This is a problem that is not likely to go away any time soon. Cats are domesticated pets and should not be allowed to roam free. Right now, cats look like dinner to coyotes. Coyotes are here so, please, stay safe and be aware.
The Humane Society of the US has a full article on living with coyotes to stay safe in urban/suburban areas. Here’s the link. Living with Coyotes.
