Ask The Good Dog Guru with Jeffery Andrew

Rocko and Jeffery

Jeffery Andrew, Dog Trainer and owner of the K9 Korral answers your questions about Dog Training.

Here’s our first question from Linda in North Sarasota.
Dear Jeffery,

My  Jack Russell/Bulldog mix – Toody is five years old.  My husband and I both work a lot of hours but fortunately our shifts split so Toody is not home alone more than 5 or so hours.  Our issue is that when we are out in the yard – Toody goes crazy barking at people walking, or riding or even driving past the house.  We’ve tried distracting her with treats, conversations, commands and nothing works. Do you have any suggestions?? My ears are killing me, and I’m worried about what the neighbors think!  Linda in North Sarasota

Hey Linda,

Interesting mix  – Jack Russell/Bulldog! There are several ways to answer this without knowing all the facts surrounding this I will do my best.

Typically dogs that do this have been encouraged at some point to bark and have fun They find out at a young age. . . if  ” I bark my parents bark back at me!” so it becomes a game to them and they get attention, so from now on ignore this behavior.  When she stops barking for even a second praise her and soon you will see the barking will diminish.  This is the most important advice I can give you –  just do not give in.   Toody’s expectation is that you will give in, and each time you do –  you will be starting all over again.

Also, here’s an idea you can practice.  Try walking have Toody around the block.  Have a friend help you with this.  When you come to a corner, have her sit and give her a treat.  Then have your friend approach.  Give her permission to greet your friend – IF she is behaving with good manners.  Be strong, clear and again don’t give in…

Keep me posted on how its going!
