Our first Meetup in the Wag and Learn! series was held Sunday at Poochie’s Pampered Pups. Focusing on mental and physical acuity Dr. Anne Chauvet of Critical Vet Care shared tips and ideas with our group for optimum health. As a pet neurologist, Dr. Chauvet pointed to some specifics that we can employ easily at home.
1) Keeping your dog engaged with new activities, games and toys will help keep their mind fresh and working.
2) Nutrition, like humans dogs need proper nutrition, check your dog food label and make sure that what you are buying has the proper amount of protein and other nutrients. As a rule of thumb the food that are less processed have a greater amount of nutritional value.
3) Exercise is key, talk with your veterinarian about the proper amount required for your dog, special circumstances may require less or more exercise.
4) Omega 3 – fish oil is as important for dogs as is for humans. The nutrient helps not only with skin and coat issues but by adding fish oil or small amounts of olive to your dog’s diet you can improve their joint health and promote faster healing should an injury occur.
Be aware of your dog’s limits, not only for exercise but also in training and playing. All good things in moderation and with the advice and recommendation from your veterinarian.
