February 23 is earmarked as the annual day to celebrate Dog Biscuits. Treats made for just dogs have been around for hundreds of years. Today we use them as rewards, training aids and just as part of our pup’s regular diet.
Feeling ambitious, we set out to find a recipe for dog treats that would be easy, not call for some crazy ingredients and have a healthy twist. We found this recipe with pumpkin which was intriguing. Pumpkin is widely thought to aid in digestion for dogs so why not make something healthy as well as tasty? Its easy and you may even have all of the ingredients in your pantry. The recipe suggests a pastry bag with a rosette tip – um well, we used a teaspoon and just slid the batter onto the cookie sheet and the result was just fine. Enjoy!
Pumpkin Treat Mini Drops
Ingredients
15 oz (425g) mashed pure pumpkin
¾ cup rice cereal
¼ cup oatmeal
¼ cup powdered milk
Preheat your oven to 300F (150C) and lightly grease a cookie sheet or baking tray.
Combine all the ingredients together well in a mixing bowl. When dry ingredients are thoroughly blended in, spoon the mixture into a pastry bag. Squeeze out small rosettes, roughly the size of a dime, onto the greased cookie sheet.
Bake the cookies in the oven at 300F (150C) for 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely before using these cookie snacks as great food rewards during training, or just as treats.
Store cookies in an air-tight container until needed.
Not feeling up to baking? No problem, healthy treats abound in our local pet supply stores. Try Holistic For Pets on Honore just south of Fruitville or the new Woofgang Bakery on (east) Bee Ridge Road near the Bee Ridge Extension
