Dear Santa

Dogs don’t care about brand names, design or trends.  They care about you, playing, eating and sleeping.  This year instead of picking up a prepacked stocking from the big box store, think about making some toys and treats from stuff you have around your house.  You’ll save money, and instead of shopping you can take your pup for a walk.

We asked Dr. Katherine Miller from the ASPCA for some easy ideas for DIY pet treats and toys.  Dr. Miller is a behavior expert with lots of experience in keeping dogs and cats busy.

  • For a chew toy that keeps on giving, soak a rope toy in chicken broth and freeze until hard.  Best consumed outside as the broth will melt as it warms up!
  • For a puzzle/noise-maker for your pup, poke holes in a card board egg carton, drop a handful of kibble in and then seal the edges with non-toxic glue.  Your dog will have a blast shaking the carton and be delighted when the kibble drops out.  (Be sure to use the cardboard egg cartons) It’s a shreddable extravaganza.
  • Same idea – but super easy – take the cardboard tube from inside a paper towel roll and put some kibble or treats in the tube.  Fold over the ends and voila!  An awesome toy.
  • Pick up some squeakers, you can buy these separately from plush toys, place in an old sock, then roll up into another old sock.  Whip stitch it closed.  Let the games begin!
  • Frozen carrots, bananas and green beans also make great teething aids for puppies.
  • As a calming aid, when things are really hectic around the house, we all need to chill out.  Try spraying a solution of water and Lavender oil on a bandana.  Essential oils are potent – so you only need a few drops in a cup of water.   Let the bandana dry and tie loosely around your pet.   She may just feel like she’s having a spa day, and you’ll enjoy the benefit too!
