While your kids are gearing up for Halloween, it’s a great time to think of something fun to have on-hand for your pups. Hey, dogs deserve treats too right? We found this awesome recipe in Gluten Free Magazine – and our dogs loved them.
Editor-in-Chief, Carol Kicinski of Simply Gluten Free developed this recipe for her Shih Tzu, and here’s what she had to say, “Believe it or not, gluten intolerance in dogs is more common than one might think. It can lead to scratching, rashes and digestive issues. My Shih Tzu Jake suffered these symptoms after he ate some store-bought treats. (I usually make his meals from raw turkey, fresh fruits and veggies.) After switching to these homemade, gluten-free dog biscuits, the symptoms stopped.!” and by the way, “There is a bonus: Jake loves these things!” We think your dogs will too.
Gluten Free Dog Biscuits
Ingredients:
2 1/2cups gluten-free oats, divided
1 1/2cups potato starch (not potato flour)
1/2 cup white or brown rice flour
3 tablespoons flaxseed meal
1 teaspoon kosher or fine sea salt
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup dry milk powder
1 sweet potato, scrubbed but not peeled
Directions
1. Put 2 cups of oats in a blender or food processor and grind into a fine powder. Combine with remaining oats, potato starch, rice flour, flaxseed meal and salt in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the egg and olive oil.
2. In a separate bowl, mix dry milk powder with 1 1Ž2 cups water. Add to oat mixture and stir to combine.
3. Grate sweet potato using the large holes of a box grater. Stir into mixture. Biscuit dough should be firm, smooth and workable. If it isn’t, add more rice flour. Cover mixture-filled bowl with a towel and let sit for 20 minutes, allowing moisture to distribute.
4. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
5. Flour a work surface with rice flour and roll biscuit dough out to either 1Ž4-inch or 1Ž2-inch thick, depending on the size of your dog.
6. Cut biscuits out with a bone-shaped (or any shape) cookie cutter, pressing firmly to cut through sweet potato. Transfer biscuits to prepared pans.
7. Bake 1.5 to 2 hours, or until dry and firm. Let cool completely. Store biscuits in a storage bag or airtight container.
