The Pet Blessing or Blessing of the Animals is a tradition Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. For the last several years, we’ve celebrated at Unity of Sarasota. Pet owners bring their fur friends for a blessing and to meet and greet with other animal lovers. You’ll have time to stroll the beautiful grounds of the property and enjoy a real feel of “old Florida”.
Every Fall people around the world gather with their pets to celebrate the Blessing of the Animals, a heartwarming tradition that honors the life of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. This year – with the swirling winds and rain in Sarasota during the months of October and tentative forecast for November, , the Pet Blessing was rescheduled for Sunday, December 1 at Unity of Sarasota at 2:00 pm. This tradition is a beautiful expression of faith, compassion, and reverence for all of God’s creatures. But how did this practice come to be? What connection does it have to St. Francis, and why is it so meaningful today?
Who Was St. Francis of Assisi?
St. Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in 1182, is one of the most beloved figures in Christian history. Known for his deep humility, simplicity, and love for nature, he renounced his wealth and status to live a life devoted to poverty, service, and care for the marginalized. His dedication to God extended beyond human beings to all creatures, great and small.
Francis’s love for animals was profound and often expressed through his teachings and actions. He is famously known for speaking to birds and calling them his brothers and sisters. One of the most well-known stories about St. Francis is that he tamed a wolf in the town of Gubbio. The wolf, which had been terrorizing the townspeople, was reconciled with the villagers after Francis spoke to it, showing compassion rather than fear or anger. Francis is also credited with the creation of the first nativity scene in 1223, using live animals to represent the humble setting of Jesus’ birth.
For St. Francis, animals were not mere creatures to be dominated but brothers and sisters to be cared for. His deep connection to nature was rooted in his belief that everything in creation was a reflection of God’s love.
Why the Blessing Matters Today
In today’s world, the Blessing of the Animals serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness, stewardship, and reverence for the environment. It reflects the ongoing relationship between humans and the natural world, a relationship that is more crucial than ever in the face of environmental challenges and the exploitation of animals. By participating in the blessing, people not only express their gratitude for their pets but also acknowledge their role as caretakers of the earth and its creatures.
The act of blessing animals also highlights the spiritual significance of God’s creation. St. Francis’s teachings remind us that the divine is present not only in people but in all living things. The blessing is a recognition that animals, like humans, are part of the Creator’s plan and deserve our care and respect.
A Global Celebration
While the Blessing of the Animals is most closely associated with St. Francis’s legacy, it has become a global celebration in many different religious communities. All faiths and people from all walks of life and faiths also observe this day by taking their pets to be blessed at local shelters, parks, or even online events. It’s a joyful time of fellowship, as families and communities come together to celebrate the bond they share with their pets and the natural world.
The Spiritual Meaning of the Blessing
The Blessing of the Animals is not just a lighthearted tradition. It carries deep spiritual meaning. For those who take part in the ceremony, the blessing serves as a way to seek divine protection and grace for their pets, acknowledging their importance as living beings created by God. It also encourages a deeper sense of responsibility toward the animals in our care, reminding us to treat them with love and compassion.
