With the summer heat rolling in, it’s totally natural to want to keep your pup cool and comfortable. But before you reach for the clippers and give your dog a summer shave, let’s talk about why that might not be the best idea.
Believe it or not, your dog’s fur isn’t just for keeping them warm in the winter—it actually works year-round to regulate their body temperature. That fluffy coat acts like natural insulation, protecting them from both cold and heat. It keeps cool air close to the skin and helps block out the sun’s harsh rays. Amazing, right?
Shaving your dog can actually make them more uncomfortable in hot weather. Without their fur, they’re exposed to direct sunlight, which increases their risk of sunburn and even heatstroke. Plus, the skin can be extra sensitive and prone to irritation once it’s exposed.
Now, that’s not to say a little grooming isn’t a good idea. A light trim can definitely help reduce matting and improve airflow, especially for long-haired breeds. Regular brushing also helps remove loose undercoat and keeps your pup feeling fresh and fluffy.
So instead of a full-on shave, treat your pup to a nice brush-out or a tidy summer trim. Keep them hydrated, avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, and always make sure they have access to shade.
Your dog’s coat is there for a reason—mother nature knew what she was doing!
Stay cool, friends (and pups)
