Managing the Canine Circus – multi-dog households

by Amy Di Piazza of Essential Canines

Introduction

What’s better than the pitter-patter of paws in your home? The answer is simple – multiple pitter-patters! To successfully navigate the joyful chaos of a multi-dog household, a few rules can make life flow smoothly. Much like managing a troupe of energetic kids, maintaining order is essential. In this post, we’ll explore some key strategies for harmonious co-existence in a household filled with furry friends.

Finding Their “Place”

Just as every child needs a designated spot for timeouts and quiet time, dogs benefit from understanding their “place.” When you command “place” and point to a specific area, your dogs should know to go there and stay until released.

This command is more than just a convenience; it helps create a sense of order and structure in the household. With practice and patience, you can train your dogs to respond to this cue, providing a designated safe space for each furry member.

Orderly Entering and Exiting

Picture this: the front door swings open, and the canine cavalry charges out, tails wagging and excitement levels through the roof. While this scene may seem endearing, it can quickly turn into chaos. Teach your dogs to wait calmly before entering or exiting. Asking them to sit and wait until called not only avoids a stampede but also reduces the adrenaline rush that can lead to unruly behavior. This simple practice sets the tone for a more controlled and enjoyable environment.

Taking Turns for Individual Attention

In a multi-dog household, it’s crucial to recognize that each pup deserves their time in the spotlight. This means when you’re petting one, the others need to practice patience. Teaching your dogs to wait their turn not only fosters self-restraint but also builds confidence.

Try incorporating their names into the routine. For example, say “Scout’s turn” as you lavish attention on Scout, and then transition with “Buddy’s turn” when shifting your focus. This not only reinforces their names but also establishes a system where each dog learns to wait their turn, promoting a sense of fairness.

Conclusion

Managing a multi-dog household can be both rewarding and challenging. The hardest part will be remaining consistent and not giving in! Stand strong, and use compassion and patience, – you can transform your furry family into a well-behaved and harmonious pack. Embrace the joy of having multiple dogs while instilling order through designated places, orderly entrances and exits, and the art of taking turns. Your canine circus will not only be entertaining but also a testament to the power of structure and love in fostering a peaceful co-existence.
